LESSONS FROM A STRANGER: HOW ONE MOMENT TAUGHT ME TO FOCUS AHEAD
This morning, while walking back from my workout routine, I noticed a man tossing rubbish into a trash bin. Nothing unusual. But what caught my attention was a young student just ahead of me.
She was on her way to school, but instead of keeping her eyes on the road, she kept glancing back at the man. In the process, she wasn’t paying attention to where she was going.
I didn’t know her, but I felt a quick piece of advice wouldn’t hurt. Gently, I said:
“If you don’t stop looking back, you’ll fall.”
Thankfully, she listened. She straightened her gaze and kept walking forward.
The Lesson Hit Me Too
As she moved on, it dawned on me that I wasn’t just advising her—I was advising myself. In fact, many of us need that same reminder.
How often do we waste energy looking back at the things we can’t change? Our past failures. Our mistakes. Our heartbreaks. Our regrets. Even the people who hurt us.
The more we stare at the past, the easier it is to stumble in the present.
Why Looking Back Holds You Back
Think about it: driving while constantly staring in the rearview mirror is a guaranteed way to crash. Life works the same way. If you keep revisiting your pain and setbacks, you’ll miss the opportunities right in front of you.
Your past was meant to teach you, not trap you.
What the Little Girl Taught Me
That short encounter with the student reminded me of two powerful truths:
1. Be Teachable – Wisdom can come from anywhere. Sometimes, the advice we give others is exactly what we need to hear ourselves.
2. Stay Focused – Progress requires direction. Keep your eyes on where you’re going, not where you’ve been.
By simply keeping her gaze forward, that little girl became my teacher for the day.
Moving Forward
As I walked past her, I gave her a smile and asked courteously, “How are you?” It felt right to acknowledge her—because she had unknowingly given me a gift: perspective.
So, here’s my reminder to you today:
Stop letting your past hold you hostage. Stop replaying failures and hurts. Start focusing on what lies ahead.
Because your future is far more important than your history.
Final Thought
The road to success, fulfillment, and growth is in front of you—not behind you. Keep walking forward.
Stay intentional. Stay focused.
It keeps getting better. 🌱
